Sarah Bell represents the essence of the girl, who is part of the woman I am today. It has developed from a place of contentment: for who I am, and the age and stage of life I am in. Being thankful for the past and excited for the future.

It is about using the unique gifts and talents I have been given, to create beautiful garments I hope you will live in and love for a long time.

MY PURPOSE IS TO ENCOURAGE ALL WOMEN, WHEREVER THEY FIND THEMSELVES ON THEIR JOURNEY, TO CELEBRATE THEIR UNIQUENESS AND FIND CONTENTMENT WITH THE AGE AND STAGE OF LIFE THEY ARE IN.

Sarah has known the love of fabric and garment making for as long as she can remember. It started with dolls clothes, moved on to teen fashion and grew steadily from there. After studying fashion in Auckland, Sarah took her first job as a workroom assistant at RCM clothing, makers of Street life and Workshop. She then worked as a designer and pattern maker.

Sarah married her sweetheart Bruce and in 1998 they ventured to London, where Sarah honed her skills in pattern-making, studying with an expert tailor. As a freelance pattern maker, Sarah varied her work between high-end designers, including; Jenny Packham, Joe Casely-Hayford and Clements Ribeiro.

It was in the excitement of London’s vibrant fashion scene where Sarah took her first steps with her own label. As they were expecting their first child, Bruce and Sarah returned home to New Zealand and settled in Auckland. As Sarah adjusted to a new stage of life she started tinkering around with embroidered Tshirts, and the Sarah Bell label was born. The label quickly grew to include dresses, knitwear and tailoring - all the things she loves. The label was picked up by Fabric in High Street and Superette in Drake St, Auckland, Plume in Christchurch and Dunedin, The Corner Store in Sydney and Antipodium in London. The label grew quickly in success, but as Sarah’s family grew, she took time away from the business to enjoy the freedom of life with Bruce and their young children.

Over the years Sarah has loved part-time work pattern-making for New Zealand labels Karen Walker and Penny Sage. Sarah has continued to develop her personal style making the majority of her own clothes. She designs and makes about 80 percent of her wardrobe, basically everything except bras, swimwear, knitwear, and the odd vintage piece. Sarah is known for her love fine fabrics, expertly cut and unique personal style. Over recent years she has felt the desire to restart the Sarah Bell label, to use these gifts to create beautiful garments for others to enjoy.

In 2020, Sarah Bell has relaunched with a purpose of sustainability: for Sarah herself as a wife and mother of four, for her family, and for the planet.
